Pediatric dentists have two or three years of additional training after dental school. Pediatric dentists specialize in the dental care of infants and children through adolescence. Dr. Dennis Burrell is pleased to provide pediatric dentistry in University Place, Washington.

Your child’s first dental treatment is generally short and serves as an opportunity for your child to meet our dentist in a friendly, non-threatening way. Because of this, there is very little treatment performed on the first visit. We want your child to become comfortable with our dentist and with sitting in the dental chair. Our dentist may ask you to sit in the dental chair and hold your child during treatment. Our dentist will check your child’s teeth for signs of decay, check their bite, and look for potential oral problems. Our hygienist may clean your child’s teeth. Then our dentist will discuss oral health care basics for children with you. The following topics may be discussed:

  • Oral hygiene practices for children
  • Fluoride needs
  • Bad oral habits like thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and lip sucking
  • Teething
  • Proper nutrition
  • Scheduling dental checkups
